Teldah Mawarire

Teldah Mawarire with 14 years’ experience in newspapers has recently ventured into development joining Civicus a world alliance that strengthens civil society organisations as a policy and research officer. She is passionate about Africa’s development and women’s rights.

Having opted out of joining university in favour of a newspaper internship, she started working at age 19 in Kwekwe, a small mining town in Zimbabwe’s Midlands Province. There she did everything, from reporting on small-town politics to selling advertising space.

In Zimbabwe Mawarire worked in various capacities at the Financial Gazette and the Zimbabwe Independent. She now lives in South Africa, where she moved to take up more sub-editing and writing opportunities.

Mawarire completed a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Science and an Honours degree in Development Studies. She is working towards a Master’s degree in the same discipline. She attended exchange programmes in Germany and the USA (Berkeley University).

She is an avid reader of African literature and researches on land reform and migration.
